TLWA RAPID RESPONSE DIVE TEAM AND STATE OF THE ART DASH BOAT ARE THE FRONT LINE OF DEFENSE IN THE BATTLE AGAINST EURASIAN WATER MILFOIL

EWM INVASION GAINS A FOOTHOLD IN THE THREE LAKES CHAIN

In the Summer of 2006, a highly invasive aquatic plant (Eurasian Water Milfoil (EWM)) peered above the waterline in the Three Lakes Chain near the Burnt Rollways Dam in Long Lake. Four years later at the near opposite end of the Chain, Virgin Lake had its first case. Left uncontrolled, EWM will have a devastating effect on the waters of Three Lakes. More information about this fast-spreading invasive aquatic plant and the measures used to control it is on the AIS webpage.

TLWA FIGHTS BACK

The Three Lakes Waterfront Association Rapid Response Dive Team arose in 2016 to help control the spread of Eurasian Water Milfoil (EWM). Starting with just three volunteers, the team had grown in 2023 to six scuba divers plus three boat crews and more than twenty support kayakers. They gather once a week throughout the summer to help locate and hand-harvest EWM. Learn more about this amazing group of volunteers from our newsletter articles listed below. Interested persons are welcome to volunteer to assist in this effort to control the spread of EWM.

TLWA ADDS A DASH BOAT TO THE REMEDIATION FORCE

Diver Assisted Suction Harvesting (DASH) is a proven method to help remove Eurasian Water Milfoil (EWM) from a lake bottom. Unlike traditional mechanical harvesters which cut and remove the tops of invasive vegetation, DASH operations remove the entire plant including the roots. Volunteers from the Three Lakes Waterfront Association have designed and built a custom DASH platform on a 25’ pontoon boat donated by Watercraft Sales. Learn more about the design and the construction of this unique boat from the TLWA Spring 2023 Newsletter article “Watercraft Sales Donates Bennington Pontoon Boat”.
