Aquatic Education and Scholarship 

In the Fall 2019, tLWA Board of Directors approved participation in a cooperative program with Three Lakes High School to expand student studies to include Freshwater Science.

PROGRAM DESIGN & GOALS

The Aquatic Education program is designed to introduce students to lake structure including physical, biological and chemical characteristics, lake classification and the influence of development.  Students will be left with a basic understanding of lake characteristics and the complexities of the functions and processes and an understanding of the need to protect and properly manage both the aquatic ecosystem and the watershed on which it is dependent.

  • The program introduces field studies and scientific methods by getting students on the water and provides hands-on practical experience with professionals using the same equipment that aquatic scientists, managers and environmental engineers use. 
  • Student becomes advocate for lake and watershed protection and conveys this to parents, siblings and friends 
  • Encourages students to consider a career in environmental science or engineering
  • Provides candidates eligible to receive TLWA Scholarship Awards 

PROGRAM inception

Through the  guidance of Paul Matthiae, the concept was developed, approved by the TLWA Board and then designed with Al Votis. This “Aquatic Explorations Program” was incorporated into the schools’ existing “Global Science” curriculum, a yearlong elective taught by Al Votis and available to juniors and seniors.  Following his retirement, the Global Science course is now taught by Luke Statz.  Stephanie Boismenue – AIS Coordinator, Oneida County was a welcome addition to the professional team.  TLWA purchased necessary field equipment for lake and stream sampling and provides instructional materials and assistance.  TLWA pontoon boats serve as on-water teaching platforms.

The Scholarship Program is one of the many ways TLWA supports the Town of Three Lakes, its’ waters and its’ citizens. For the past thirty-six years, a two-year scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who is furthering her or his education in one of the many aspects of environmental sciences. In cooperation with Three Lakes HS in April each year, students provide a resume listing their accomplishments in school and in outside activities. The school is notified when the student has been selected and they in turn notify the awardee. In May, the school holds an event to honor graduating students in academic and athletic achievements. Scholarships are presented by many businesses, organizations and individuals.  

Wherever these scholarship recipients end up in their respective careers, they are using their education and experience in environmental studies in the day-to-day decisions required as members of their respective communities
